Prêt à Voyager

Prêt à Voyager Boarding Pass

I was recently featured on Prêt à Voyager, a fantastic travel & design blog run by the lovely Anne Ditmeyer. It was so fun to prepare the post as it gave me an excuse to go through my photos and reflect a bit on my travels so far. Read my boarding pass post here and also check out the past contributors to the column, some really inspiring travellers. Many many thanks for including me in this project Anne!

Die Sellerie, Vienna

Die Sellerie design shop, Vienna

A lot of the places I've encountered on my travels I've come across by way of reputation or recommendation, which has been so helpful in narrowing in on exactly what to see and do. However, I was lucky enough to stumble upon Die Sellerie myself, which makes it feel like even more of a treasure. This beautiful shop is the mastermind of four young graphic designers who stock it full of endearing handmade, local and ethically produced products, many of which were designed by the owners themselves. As it is a small scale production, the shop is staffed by the owners and is only open select days of the week, to allow them to work full time elsewhere. I think the shop resonated so much with me as it's exactly the type of thing Charlotte and I have talked about doing one day and made me feel like maybe it could actually be a possibility.

As there's not much room in my bag I wasn't able to buy everything I would have liked but I did make out with a few postcards and a bottle of wine to share with Charlotte, if it's able to make it with me all the way until I reach South Africa. The guys at the shop were super sweet and pointed me in the direction of an incredibly charming (with just the right amount of kitsch) 50s style cafe down the street, aptly named Espresso, which I also would definitely recommend stopping into while you're in the neighbourhood.

Train ride, Switzerland & Austria

graphic design process

If you ever have the chance to take the train from Zurich to Vienna, especially in the winter, please do not pass up this incredible trip. After spending way too much money in Switzerland I had to get back east, and fast! So, I booked an 8 hour direct train from Zurich to Vienna, which turned out to be what I will likely remember as a highlight of my time in Europe. I brought a book to read and a few projects to work on but I ended up gazing out the window for the majority of the trip.

I did manage to spend a couple hours doing some rough sketches and page layout for the PARK sponsorship book I'm working on. PARK is a not for profit organization promoting the creative and fashion community in Calgary that I've been working with for a few years now. For this project I'm pulling inspiration from the string art I found in Prague, and look forward to many more collaborations with this amazing team in the future.

Travel note, Switzerland

travel note
Don't get me wrong, I love travelling and meeting new people, but it does get exhausting after awhile. So, I was so fortunate to have Brittney, one of my oldest friends from home, meet up with me in Switzerland for a week. She was here to visit family and ski and brought me along with her. We were hosted by her incredibly generous cousin and her husband, a Swiss man, in the charming town of Affoltern am Albis, about a half hour train ride from Zurich. We also had the chance to escape to Laax, a ski resort in the Alps, for a girls' weekend. It was so nice to let my traveller guard down and be surrounded by friends for the week. And to have much needed girl talk with one of my closest friends.

Back on my own now, making my way east as Switzerland, while beautiful, was tough on my wallet. Also, speaking of old friends, I bought my ticket to see Charlotte in South Africa! Definitely need to start saving my change...

Luzerner Theater, Lucerne

Luzerner Theater program design

Check out this amazing branding and graphic design from Luzerner Theater, which is extended through the printed material, website and the building itself. In such a traditional looking town the modern design really stood out as I wandered along the river. The theatre's square is where the Denkzettel 11/12 poster exhibition was being held so it's a really cool area to check out in Lucerne for design if you're ever able to visit.

Poster design, Lucerne

Denkzettel 11/12 poster design, LucerneI stumbled upon the Denkzettel 11/12 poster design exhibition at Theatre Square by accident during my day trip to Lucerne today. As it was late into the evening there was no one around the theatre to explain what the exhibit was all about. Upon further research I found that the name "Denksettel" translates to "Lessons" and this annual exhibition focuses on lessons for the new year as expressed by local graphic design students. The more specific details of the program get lost in translation, however I think the work speaks for itself.

These great brochure designs for the Museum Bärengasse caught my eye at the Zürich Hauptbahnhof tourist information desk. They are clearly out of date so I didn't actually catch either exhibition. But, good design nonetheless.

Andrea Heller, Swiss artist

Swiss artist Andrea Heller exhibit poster, Zürich

I saw this beautiful poster for Swiss artist Andrea Heller's exhibit at the Helmhaus gallery while was walking along the Limmat River in Zürich today. Intrigued by the poster, I went inside and was taken by the colour, texture and movement of her work . The few photos I managed to snap on my iPhone don't do her pieces justice so here are some of my favourites from her site:

Peter's Yard, Edinburgh cafe

Peter's Yard, Edinburgh cafe

I've spent my time in Edinburgh being hosted by Steven Oates, an incredibly talented (albeit, sometimes forgetful) photographer. He's just starting to get himself out there a bit more as business is picking up so I'm working with him to rebrand and market his freelance photography business. We've done most of the preliminary work at the pub (I love Scotland) and I've spent a bit of my spare time this week doing some rough notes and sketches. Today I sat down with my macbook at Peter's Yard, a gorgeous bakery and cafe right off the Meadows for lunch, coffee and a treat to help me work. I ended up here after reading about it in Steve's copy of Wallpaper's City Guide to Edinburgh and was so glad I did as the service, food and coffee were outstanding and it was a lovely spot to work. Unfortunately I didn't get too far as my battery ran out just as I was getting into it but it's a start anyway!
